Iceland Summer 2018 – Day 11

Mjóifjörður – possibly the best fjord in the world, at least for me. OK I admit I may not know that many fjords, but this one was so spectacular, including a fascinating cascade of waterfalls from the mountain pass down to the fjord!

Iceland Summer 2018 – Day 9

A windy day. A day with many changes in plans. Cancellations and rebookings. More time in Myvatn. Well, we have to take what Iceland has to offer, even in best sunshine there can be problems.

Original plan: Drive Sprengisandur and another F-Road to Askja and then to Sigurdarskali mountain hut.
Original plan abandoned: After 40 km on Sprengisandur at Aldeyjarfoss, due to the heavy wind, we were first unsure, then called a ranger hut further along Sprengisandur and based on their weather report decided to return to Myvatn and leave out the central Highland for the moment.
New plan: Spend one more day at Myvatn, then use one additional day in the Eastfjords (which turned out to be a very good decision, more in the next few days).

Iceland Summer 2018 – Day 8

Starting the second week with otherworldly, even Martian perspectives – we have reached Myvatn, one of the most active geothermal areas of the country. Sulphurous smells and strong winds were part of the day, too.

Iceland Summer 2018 – Day 7

First week complete – and it feels like we have seen so much already, and yet nothing at all. Iceland is full of wonders, and every corner we turn we discover a new spot with is its own beauty.

Today, it is the rest of the northern fjords, and then Godafoss and Dettifoss with Sellfoss and the wonderful end of the canyon at Asbyrgi.

Iceland Summer 2018 – Day 6

Today, we toured the troll peninsula, with a historic museum of grass houses in Glaumbær, crossed the wide river and moved north on the other side of the fjord to tiny Hofsós for another swim in a surprisingly big and modern swimming pool / hot tub with infinity pool across the fjord. We concluded the day in Siglufjörður with its swiss-made avalanche protection, also famous for fjord-skiing in winter and for the recently rejuvenated harbor incl. the grand Siglo hotel.

Iceland Summer 2018 – Day 5

The classics in Western Iceland – from Reykholt to Thingvellir, Geysir and Godafoss and then across the “easiest” highland route – Kjölur, the first of the F-roads we would try. In the highlands, we stopped at Hveravellir for a hot tub pit stop in the driving rain, which was regularly interchanging with shine.

From the wonderful Snaefellsnes peninsula to the sights of the Western mainland of Iceland around Hraunfossar and Bodafoss – and an interesting soak in the thermal baths of Krauma.
