Between the densely settled areas of Lake Constance, Stuttgart and Ulm, there is the protected valley of the young Danube. The small river meanders through the rocks it has eroded, and tiny roads with many bends offer glimpses into the valley that is almost like a National Park.

A soft day turned out fine: Blue Ridge Parkway
The pictures probably speak for themselves. The day really started out with pouring rain that hardly made you see to the entrance sign at the Blue Ridge Parkway’s northern edge, but only a few miles in, a few minutes later, and a few hundred feet altitude higher had me literally stand above the clouds. Note: You have to try your luck to be lucky and have bad days turn out well…
Hiking the Overall Run, Shenandoah
The hike to Overall Run Falls turned out to be a little longer than expected at 6 miles. This happens if you can’t wait to get going and park not in the foreseen parking lot for the hike but one lot earlier and then hike part of the Appalachian Trail to get to the actual loop trail… But it was good exercise
Front Royal, historic gateway to the Shenandoah National Park
Started a hiking weekend with a nice stroll through historic ‘downtown’ (well, Main Street, rather), had a nice dinner at Elements, before heading to Shenandoah National Park.
Welcome to Philadelphia
Driving across the Delaware River after a long flight into JFK and a less-than-amusing drive through pouring rain brought this nice sunset-slash-clearing-weather as I got into the city.
Schönbrunn Castle, Vienna
On my way to Laxenburg Castle to visit IIASA (Int’l Institute for Applied Systems Analysis) – for work – I visited Schönbrunn Castle just as it was opening that early morning.
Around the Danube Island in Vienna, Austria
Took a walk around the Vienna Danube Island and the Handelskai walking path between the two train bridges across the Danube. It was a nice spring day out.
Tössscheidi evening bike ride
Quick trip into the surprisingly easy-access but wild-romantic area of Tössscheidi. I was not even aware Zurich canton has such a wild and rugged landscape!
Zurich Hinterland Waterfalls I
A half day out hiking to some unknown but beautiful waterfalls just a few minutes away in the Zurich Hinterland…
The Lake Dwellings of Unteruhldingen
Unteruhldingen’s UNESCO World Heritage neolithic lake dwellings were the destination of a bike trip around Lake Überlingen, the northwestern part of Lake Constance, during a nice early spring weekend day.
