Excursion to Kiawah Island
Kiawah Island is a very posh, gated community, but there is public beach access right as you drive up to the main gate, and the mile long sandy coast and the inland marshes are well worth the trip.
South of Broad and on Broad – Charleston
Hampton Plantation
A quick visit to the Hampton Plantation State Historic Park between Mount Pleasant SC and Myrtle Beach SC on the Hampton Creek and just south of the South Santee River in what they call ‘The Lowland’ here.
Mount Pleasant and the Bridge
Just across the Cooper River from Charleston is Mount Pleasant SC with its new developments that have a great view towards the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, third longest of all cable-stayed bridges in the Western Hemisphere. The boat landing from Remley Point provides a particularly nice view across the lower Cooper River Delta and the bridge.

Congaree National Park
Visiting Congaree National Park, an important ecological space along the Congaree River in the middle of South Carolina, and the largest remaining contiguous patch of hardwood bottomgrowth forest (‘floodplain forest’), playing a key role in the floodplain and water management along the rivers here.

On business to research the Cumbria floods, there are some positive moments in the flood stricken areas of Cockermouth, and as the direct road to Windermere is still missing, on Kirkstone Pass illuminated by the headlights of passing cars.
